SHAME LOOSES ITS GRIP

“Alcohol was my master.” - Alcoholics Anonymous, page 8

"You know how prone these people are to evil.” - Exodus 32:22

For what it’s worth: It took years for the long-term results of daily alcohol induced oblivion to finally ware off. As I gradually became more alive and alert I had to face some painful reality: every thing of value was lost. Immediately my shame wants to blame me: it was because of a deep, dark evil in me. But how much was caused by my alcoholism? How much resulted from alcohol being mixed with the character defects that were already present? I’m still not sure. But the longer I am sober the more I see that it was not me, it was alcoholism. And each time God gives me a clear look at the impact of this insidious disease, a little more shame looses its grip on me.
